DURHAM, N.C. – Bruce Stutz, one of America’s most respected nature writers, read from his newest book, Chasing Spring: An American Journey Through a Changing Season, on Tuesday, Feb, 7, in Hug Commons.
Stutz is the former features editor of Audubon Magazine and editor-in-chief of Natural History. For Chasing Spring, he spent three months on the road, traveling across America to document the arrival and progress of spring in diverse landscapes, from the mesquite-studded deserts of southern Arizona to the pine and hardwood forests of central North Carolina, including a stop at the Nicholas School and a tour of its research sites in Duke Forest.
At each stop, Stutz chronicled the natural changes that spring brought – and the subtle underlying factors, associated with climate change, that now are threatening the basic processes of nature and causing the season’s onset to occur earlier than before in many parts of the nation.
At the Nicholas School, he interviewed four faculty members – William Schlesinger, Gabriel Katul, James Clark and Norm Christensen – to learn more about the mechanics of the changes he was witnessing. His book recognizes the Nicholas School faculty members’ contributions.
