DURHAM, N.C. – An article by Nicholas School faculty member , associate professor of sedimentary geology, has been selected for reprinting in a special issue of the popular science magazine, Scientific American.

The article, “Panoramas of the Seafloor,” is one of 12 articles about earth sciences that were chosen by the magazine’s editors for the special issue due to outstanding content and continuing popularity with magazine readers. Popularity was measured by reader feedback, downloads and requests for reprints. The article details the use of modern sonar technologies to map the continental margins of the United States, and to reveal the varied scenery that’s usually hidden underwater. It was published originally in June 1997.

Pratson’s co-author is William F. Haxby, a research scientist at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

The special issue of Scientific American, called “Our Ever Changing World,” will hit newsstands later this month. The issue will also be available to online subscribers.
