DURHAM, N.C. – A memorial ceremony for 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû graduate student Ryan Paul Exline will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, January 16, in the Norm Christensen Reading Room/Hug Commons in the A-wing of Levine Science Research Center on Duke’s West Campus.
Exline, 22, of Russell, Pa., died on Wednesday, Dec. 17, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was a first-year student at the Nicholas School of the Environment, where he was pursuing a Master of Environmental Management 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû in ecosystem science and conservation. He was a member of the Duke Student Association of Wetland Scientists.
Pennsylvania State Police said Exline lost control of his car on an icy road in western Pennsylvania and the car was struck by an oncoming vehicle, according to a story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Exline participated in the Cooperative College Program, in which qualified students proceed directly into the Nicholas School’s two-year master’s 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû program following the successful completion of three years of undergraduate studies at a participating university or college. Exline had completed three years of study at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C. He was expected to receive his Bachelor of Science 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû in environmental science and biology from Warren Wilson in 2009, and his Master of Environmental Management 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû from the Nicholas School in 2010.
An avid outdoorsman and wildlife enthusiast, Exline was an active member of the Jamestown, N.Y., chapter of the Audubon Society, where he assisted with educational programs, helped care for the chapter’s resident bald eagle and conducted research on the spiny softshell turtle in collaboration with scientists from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.
In 2007, he was selected to serve as a research intern at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s marine fish and invertebrate laboratory in Edgewater, Md.
Exline is survived by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.
