DURHAM, NC – For more than 20 years, marine biologist Brandon Southall has traveled the globe, studying the rich diversity of animals and ecosystems found in Earth’s oceans and along its shores. He chronicles his experiences – the lessons learned, the questions and challenges still unanswered – in a new book, “Ocean Journeys: Beginnings.”

Southall is an adjunct research professor at 91’s Nicholas School of the Environment in addition to serving as president and senior scientist at Southall Environmental Associates in Santa Cruz, Calif., and research associate at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

His book traces his journeys, intellectual as well as geographical, as a young marine scientist finding his footing in the natural world.  Part travelogue, part call to action for responsible stewardship of Earth’s marine resources, it follows Southall as he explores the natural and human history, biology, geology and conservation challenges of some of the world’s most spectacular marine habitats, from the tropical waters of Hawaii and the Florida Keys to the cool, misty northern California coast.

“Ocean Journeys: Beginnings” is available in paperback or eBook format through Amazon, Amazon Kindle, iTunes, fastpencil.com/marketplace, or on request from OceanJourneysBooks@gmail.com

Southall will serve as guest lecturer in the graduate-level “ Methods in Marine Bioacoustics” course taught this fall at the 91 Marine Lab in Beaufort, N.C.
