DURHAM, NC - Kevin P. McCarthy, former vice president of development and executive director of the Holy Name Health Care Foundation, part of the Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, N.J., has been named associate dean for external affairs at the Nicholas School of the Environment effective Jan. 3.

McCarthy, who is returning to North Carolina, has more than 23 years senior-level experience managing development programs and in producing profitable fund raising solutions for nonprofit institutions. As associate dean, he will direct all development and related outreach programs for the Nicholas School, providing strategic advice to the dean on development initiatives. He will oversee a program responsible for corporate and foundation relations, major gifts, alumni relations and information services, outreach programs and annual giving.

Dean William L. Chameides says, 鈥淲e are so fortunate to have Kevin join the Nicholas School team. He brings the complete package: a huge base of experience and an impressive record in fund-raising to be sure, but also a passion to make the world a better place, and a creative, strategic mind. I look forward to working with him in the coming years as we transform a great program at a great university to new heights in its mission to create knowledge and leaders of consequence for a sustainable future. And he鈥檒l be hitting the ground running, as we plan for the new Duke Environment Hall on the Durham campus, the new Marine Sciences and Conservation Genetics Center at the Beaufort Marine Lab, and a future Duke fundraising campaign.鈥

At Holy Name, McCarthy coordinated capital campaign to build a new inpatient hospice facility, and he directed its overall fund raising efforts. He had previously served as Holy Name鈥檚 fundraising chief from 1993 to 2003 and directed its giving programs to unprecedented levels of achievement.

Prior to rejoining the New Jersey foundation, he served as vice president of development and executive director of the WakeMed Foundation at WakeMed Health and Hospitals System in Raleigh, N.C. Under his leadership, WakeMed Foundation assets grew from $4 million in 2004 to $20 million in 2009. He also helped launch a $20 million children鈥檚 hospital campaign.

McCarthy holds a master of science in leadership and strategic management from Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y., and a bachelor of arts in political science from State University of New York College at Fredonia.
