DURHAM, N.C. – Kenneth H. Reckhow, professor emeritus of water resources at 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû’s Nicholas School of the Environment, has been appointed to a three-year term on the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC).

Reckhow , a widely cited expert on water quality and management, will chair the BOSC subcommittee that oversees the EPA Office of Research and Development’s Safe and Sustainable Water Resources Research Program.

In addition to his faculty post at Duke, Reckhow is a research fellow at the Institute for the Environment at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

He is a past director of the University of North Carolina Water Resources Research Institute; a past president of the National Institutes for Water Resources and the North American Lake Management Society; and former chair of the North Carolina Sedimentation Control Commission.

In 2001, Reckhow served as chair of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Panel on the USEPA Total Maximum Daily Load Program.  He was a member of the NAS Panel on USGS National Water Quality Assessment from 2000-01; a member of its Panel on Restoration of the Everglades Ecosystem from 2003-05; and served as chair of its Panel on the Evaluation of Chesapeake Bay Progress Implementation for Nutrient Reduction to Improve Water Quality from 2009-2011.  He has published two books and more than 100 scientific papers.

EPA established BOSC to provide advice, information and recommendations about its Office of Research and Development’s research program.
