Update Thursday pm:
The 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû Marine Laboratory will reopen Friday morning, January 31st, on a two hour delay.  Lows along the immediate coast are predicted to be slightly above freezing during the night with temperatures climbing during the day on Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a driving advisory (see below). Please proceed with caution and assess your driving situation carefully.

...ICY ROADS WILL PERSIST INTO FRIDAY MORNING...

MANY ROADS ACROSS THE REGION STILL HAVE A LAYER OF ICE ON THEM FROM THE WINTRY PRECIPITATION EARLIER IN THE WEEK. SINCE THE ICE IS QUITE THICK IN MANY SPOTS HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION INTO FRIDAY MORNING.

TEMPERATURES HAVE CLIMBED A LITTLE ABOVE FREEZING TODAY AND THIS HAS PRODUCED SOME MELTING...HOWEVER WHATEVER MELTING DOES OCCUR
WILL LIKELY REFREEZE OVERNIGHT...ESPECIALLY INLAND WHERE LOWS WELL BELOW FREEZING ARE EXPECTED. SOME VERY LIGHT PRECIPITATION IS
EXPECTED NEAR THE COAST TONIGHT. MOST OF THIS PRECIPITATION WILL OCCUR WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE ABOVE FREEZING...HOWEVER IF SOME
FREEZING DRIZZLE DOES DEVELOP NO ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED.

TEMPERATURES WILL RISE WELL ABOVE FREEZING LATER FRIDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON AND SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN TRAVEL CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE EXTRA CAUTION. ALLOW AMPLE DISTANCE BETWEEN YOURSELF AND OTHER VEHICLES...TO AVOID THE RISK OF A COLLISION IF SLIPPERY CONDITIONS ARE ENCOUNTERED. ALLOW A LITTLEEXTRA TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION SAFELY.

Update Thursday am:
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for eastern North Carolina for ice and snow covered roads. The Department of Transportation reports that all secondary roads are covered in ice and snow and that major roads have not been completely cleared. Highway 70 through Morehead City has one partial lane each way made by traffic with snow and ice on either side and between tire ruts. The bridges are mostly covered with snow and ice. The road onto the Beaufort Campus is covered in a layer of ice topped by snow and the parking lots are covered as well.

The temperatures should warm to above freezing some time during the afternoon but will fall rapidly later in the afternoon, refreezing any previously melted precipitation. Dining services are running on schedule and FMD personnel are working to keep steps and sidewalks clear. The Marine Lab will remain closed for business throughout the day today (Thursday, January 30). If you have to be out and about, use extreme caution.

We will continue to monitor driving conditions and issue advisories as warranted.

Update Wednesday am:
Carteret County will remain under a Winter Storm Warning until 4pm today.  Snow is accumulating on top of the ice accumulation.  Temperatures are not expected to get above freezing until possibly tomorrow afternoon.  Driving is very hazardous and roadways have not been cleared.  The Marine Lab will remain 'closed for business' until noon tomorrow (Thursday, January 30th).

Dining services will continue to run on schedule.  FMD personnel are on campus and will remain overnight.  Critical areas are being salted for foot traffic but refreezing hinders clearing efforts.  Please proceed with caution.

We will continue monitoring the weather and will issue additional advisories as warranted.
