What is your previous work experience, if any? Please describe briefly.
I entered the workforce as an environmental health scientist at a non-profit addressing environmental contamination in vulnerable communities. Over the course of my time there, I worked extensively in Central Asia and the Duck Valley Indian Reservation on projects relating to toxic mining waste, air pollution, and pesticide exposures.
Why did you choose the Nicholas School's professional master's 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû program(s)?
The Nicholas School was the obvious choice for me due to its explicit attention to ecotoxicology and environmental health as a subject of study. I was excited by the option to conduct research as a professional student and found that the program structure and curriculum aptly reflect the interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of environmental work. While it was clear to me what I wanted to focus on, I appreciated the ability to explore other areas of environmental management and to collaborate with students of diverse environmental backgrounds and interests.
Do you have any areas of interest or special focus you plan to undertake during your time at the Nicholas School and Duke?
I was fortunate that my two greatest environmental interests, ecotoxicology and environmental modeling, are strongly represented at the Nicholas School. While much of my past experience revolved around high desert ecosystems, I am looking forward to learning more about the applications of these subjects in environments and situations that I am less familiar with. Beyond the Nicholas School, I will certainly not miss out on the opportunity to take environment-oriented courses at the Fuqua School of Business and the School of Law.
What are your career aspirations?
There are several roles I hope to see myself occupy during my lifetime, but most immediately I plan to begin my professional career as an ecotoxicologist in the Environmental Protection Agency or similar state agency. I have always loved the international and collaborative approach to solving environmental issues, so I would be ecstatic to take on a position that involves travel or working with global teams.
